Lake Kivu is a fresh water lake located in the Great rift valley, lying on the border between Rwanda to the East and Democratic republic of Congo to the west.
The lake is renowned for its unique geological features including the presence of large amounts of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide gases. It is home to four species of freshwater crab including two non-endemic and two endemic crab species.
