Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, located in the Virunga conservation area, shelters the highest mountain gorillas.

It was initially a small area which was gazette to protect the mountain gorillas which were facing extinction due to poaching. Aside from mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkeys which live in the bamboo vegetation at the base of volcanoes. Visitors get to go for gorilla trekking as well as golden monkey trekking safari. Wildlife inhabiting the park include spotted hyenas, buffalos, elephants, bushbucks and duiker. The Park also hosts around 170 species of birds thus offering great birdwatching experience.
