Kigali City

Kigali is the capital and the largest city of Kigali.

Kigali has been Rwanda’s economic, cultural and political hub since Rwanda gained independence from Belgian rule in 1962. Kigali is known for its cleanliness, organized urban planning and efforts towards sustainability. French is widely used in Kigali and Rwanda in general. However, people in Kigali also speak English, Kinyarwanda and Swahili. Rwanda as a country has a community service day called “omuganda” where roads are closed and cleaning starts. It happens on every last Saturday of the month. Plastic bags are not allowed in Kigali and the country as a whole, instead paper bags are used. Tourists visiting Kigali will not be disappointed as there are variety of destination where they could experience culture and Rwanda’s history. Some of the historical sites in Kigali include Kigali memorial center which is a resting place for the genocide victims, Nyanza memorial center, Belgium soldiers’ memorial site, statue gorilla, presidential palace museum just to name a few.
